Hey Reader, Here’s something most signed artists won’t say out loud: that big advance check isn’t “free money.” Sure, it looks good at first, tens of thousands dropped into their account. But what really happens? They’ve just agreed to give away most of their rights, royalties, and control over their music and brand. Every studio session, every promo dollar, every music video… it all comes out of that advance. And until the label makes their money back, the artist isn’t really seeing much else. It’s like taking out a loan, but instead of paying it back with cash, you’re paying with your career, creativity, and ownership. That’s the part nobody talks about. Meanwhile, independent artists look at that and think, “If I had that kind of money, I’d make it too.” But here’s the thing: you can build that same foundation without selling away your ownership. How? By setting up your artist career like a real business: 💼 Register your business (LLC): It separates your personal life from your artist career, and opens the door to bigger opportunities. 💳 Build business credit: Labels use advances to fund projects. Independent artists can leverage credit to do the same, for shows, marketing, even gear, without giving up their rights. 🏦 Separate your finances: Have one account for your music business. Every stream, merch sale, or show deposit should flow through there. It makes taxes, planning, and growth way easier. Signed artists get advances. Independent artists can build assets. That’s the real power. Most independent artists think “business” means getting streams, selling tickets, or dropping merch. But here’s what most don’t realize: the most successful artists separate their personal life from their artist business. This is the side of music most artists ignore, but it’s exactly what allows the independent artist community to grow beyond streams and into real, sustainable careers. The earlier you set this up, the faster you’ll unlock opportunities that don’t depend on a label. I just broke this down step-by-step in my latest blog: 👉 Read: How to Build Your Artist Business Credit Have a productive week Reader, |

Hey Reader, Let’s talk about something that makes a lot of independent artists uncomfortable. Money. More specifically, making money from your music. I’ve noticed something over the years. A lot of artists feel weird about selling. Some feel like charging for their art makes them a “sell out.”Some feel like it’s shameful to promote their work. Some quietly think: Who am I to put a price on this? I’ve had that belief too. I used to think: Who am I to charge for a session?Who am I to charge for...
Hey Reader, I want to share a moment that changed everything for me. When I first started, I thought my job was simple: Make beats. Record vocals. Deliver the project. Clock in, clock out. Keep it moving. But then one night in the studio, I was working with an artist who came in heavy. Life heavy. The kind of “I don’t even know if I’m supposed to be doing music anymore” heavy. I told her “let’s just do something from scratch, no youtube beats, just whatever feels right for you right now” So...
Hey Reader, I have to take accountability, cause even when I always say you don't have to this alone, there was a time I thought I could do it all myself I was juggling studio sessions, producing beats, recording artists, planning releases, and building my brand… all while working other jobs to pay the bills. I wore every hat: producer, engineer, manager, marketer, sometimes even the coffee runner. At first, it felt empowering. But soon, I noticed something I thought was just a burn out, but...
